Wall Street's August was best since World War II

Wall Street, which finished its best August in the post-World War II era -and busiest ever - opened September with a surge, but profit taking trimmed the gain.

Chemical Bank and US Trust Company of New York jolted the investment community by raising the rate they charge brokers for loans to 113/4 percent. But the Federal Reserve took some of the sting out of those increases by injecting money into the banking system.
