Polish ban on newsman may prompt US retaliation

The Reagan administration is considering retaliation against Poland for suspending the press accreditation of New York Times correspondent John Darnton, the State Department said.

Department spokesman John Hughes also acknowledged that the US had received a Polish protest over broadcasts to Poland by the Voice of America (VOA) and Radio Free Europe (RFE).

Mr. Hughes said the action against Mr. Darnton was unjustified, and he accused Polish authorities of conducting a concerted campaign against Western news representatives in their country, adding: ''We have the question of retaliation under active consideration.''
