Carter: US gave Israeli invasion a green light

President Jimmy Carter said ''very knowledgeable people in Israel'' informed him the Reagan administration gave Israel the go-ahead to invade Lebanon.

Secretary of State George Shultz said in Washington that Mr. Carter's information is not correct. Carter told the The Atlanta Journal and Constitution he had not talked personally to Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and could not say for sure Washington approved the invasion. Carter said national security adviser William Clark sent some aides to Plains to brief him on the Lebanese crisis.
