An ugly plastic countertop can be successfully painted

August 20, 1982

Q. We bought a house which had black laminated plastic bathroom counter-tops, and we can't afford to replace them right now. Is there any material that would satisfactorily cover the laminated plastic with a more pleasing lighter color? Leonard G. Covington Duncanville, Texas

A. Happily there is a way to satisfactorily paint that black countertop. Carefully remove any grease or soap residue. Then thoroughly sand the top with 320-grit sandpaper.

Finally, apply a high-quality catalyzed epoxy or polyurethane coating in a color of your choice. Follow the labeled directions precisely.
