US-trained commandos hit Salvadoran guerrillas

August 20, 1982

Army commandos trained in the United States spearheaded a 2,000-man ''hammer and anvil'' attack aimed at ousting El Salvador guerrillas from eastern strongholds, Army officers said.

The officers said about 500 soldiers from the US-trained Atlacatl Brigade and two companies from the Belloso Battalion that received instruction in Ft. Bragg, N.C., are leading the offensive. US-supplied ''Dragonfly'' jets bombed rebel positions 36 miles east of the capital, they said.
