'Dense pack' reportedly pushed by US for missiles

The Pentagon is planning a new system for deploying MX missiles outlined by Defense Secretary Caspar W. Weinberger for a congressional subcommittee this week, the New York Times reported.

It quoted congressional and Pentagon officials as saying the plan calls for deploying the nuclear missiles initially in a $25 billion base, using the cluster arrangement known as ''dense pack'' which President Reagan prefers. The plan also envisioned adding defensive missiles, using empty silos as deception, and basing missiles deep in the sides of mountains.
