US may have new policy on Namibia settlement

The United States does not link a settlement in Namibia (South West Africa) to the departure of Cuban troops from Angola, a senior US diplomat said on his arrival in Luanda, according to the official Angolan news agency. It quoted Frank Wisner, deputy assistant secretary of state for African affairs.

The United States had been supporting South Africa's linkage policy, and had refused to recognize the Angolan government in Luanda because of the presence of thousands of troops on Angolan soil since the country's independence in 1975
