US and Greece resume talks on military bases

August 17, 1982

The United States and Greece are discussing the future of American military bases here.

Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou talked Monday with US Ambassador Monteagle Sterns on the issue, informed sources said. Ambassador Sterns returned from Washington last week. Negotiations over the status and operation of four bases -- two in Athens and two on the island of Crete, as well as several smaller installations -- were suspended in June. Mr. Papandreou came to power last fall with a campaign pledge to close the bases and get the North Atlantic Treaty Organization out of Greece.
