Quebec Liberal leader, Claude Ryan, resigns

August 12, 1982

Claude Ryan resigned as leader of the Quebec Liberal Party, the main opposition to the separatist Parti Quebecois led by Quebec Premier Rene Levesque , the Wall Street Journal reported.

Mr. Ryan, who has led the provincial party since 1978, said he quit because he didn't believe he had enough support among Liberals for his leadership to survive a planned confidence vote at a party convention next month.
