Ban on chemical weapons gets US prod at Geneva

The United States gave top priority Tuesday to a ban on chemical weapons, saying evidence was mounting that Soviet-backed troops were using them against antigovernment forces in Afghanistan.

US delegate Louis Fields, addressing the 40-nation Disarmament Committee here , also urged a treaty prohibiting radiological weapons, but said the US did not feel the time was ripe for concluding a comprehensive nuclear test-ban treaty.
