2 US Mideast embassies thronged by protesters

August 10, 1982

Massive anti-American demonstrations took place Monday outside two US embassies in the Mideast.

About 500 Palestinian demonstrators attacked and damaged the US Embassy in Damascus in protest against American Mideast policy. Smashing windows and burning the US flag, they hoisted a Palestinian flag and pasted portraits of Yasser Arafat on the building. There were no reports of a break in embassy security.

At the embassy in Kuwait, thousands of people grouped in a procession rare in Kuwait, where public demonstrations were banned in 1976. Shouting the United States is Israel's partner in the Lebanon invasion, they called for an oil embargo against the US and severance of all ties.
