US holding off on rules to alter teen employment

August 4, 1982

The administration, under pressure from organized labor and educators, held off on controversial new regulations that would allow some teen-agers to work longer hours and for less than the minimum wage.

Just before House hearings on the proposed changes, Deputy Undersecretary of Labor Robert Collyer sent a letter to the Labor Standards Subcommittee announcing a five-month extension of the period for public comment and his intention to revise the revisions. He said the extension would allow the Labor Department to consult more extensively with business, labor, and educational groups.
