Gandhi draws parallels: El Salvador, Afghanistan

August 2, 1982

Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi equated US involvement in El Salvador with the Soviet role in Afghanistan on NBC's ''Meet the Press'' Sunday, saying she saw no reason to make distinctions between them.

Asked if she was equating US support for the Salvadoran government, which Washington has provided with about 50 military advisers and financial aid, with the 1979 intervention by more than 80,000 Soviet troops in Afghanistan, she replied: ''It may not be exactly the same situation, but the USSR was invited by the government there.''
