Poland says it has freed 1,200, but not Walesa

July 28, 1982

Polish authorities completed the release of more than 1,200 political internees announced by military ruler Wojciech Jaruzelski last week, official sources said Tuesday.

They said Lech Walesa, the interned leader of Poland's Solidarity union movement, would probably not be freed in the near future.

Poland also reported Tuesday its cost of living more than doubled in the first half of this year and blamed Western sanctions for its ''serious'' economic difficulties.
