27 prominent members quit ruling Spanish party

July 22, 1982

Twenty-seven prominent members of Spain's ruling Union of the Democratic Center Party said they were defecting to a new conservative party.

Twelve deputies, eight senators, four former parliamentarians, and three exministers joined the Popular Democratic Party formed by Oscar Axzaga, a Christian Democrat who recently abandoned the ruling party. They said they would support the government until general elections, due within eight months.
