Bamberger boosts Brewers

July 21, 1982

''The best team in baseball is Milwaukee,'' said New York Met Manager George Bamberger, who once piloted the Brewers. ''That Milwaukee hitting power can beat you in half a dozen different ways, and the Brewers also have an outstanding defense. But the man who is going to make the difference between first and second place for Milwaukee is Rollie Fingers, who is the best and most consistent relief pitcher in the American League. If I'd had Fingers in my bullpen when I managed the Brewers, I can guarantee you we would have won two pennants.''

Although disappointed that the Mets haven't done better this season, Bamberger blames it on a pitching staff that has constantly had to deal with multiple injuries.
