Woman golfers tee it up

July 15, 1982

For some reason, the US Women's Open golf championship has never quite achieved the stature or visibility of the men's, but even so, this week's 30th renewal of the event promises to be quite a shootout. The field at the Del Paso Country Club in Sacramento, Calif., will boast nine previous winners, including a trio of repeaters - Hollis Stacy, JoAnne Carner, and Donna Caponi.

Stacy tuned up for the Open by winning the West Virginia Classic in sudden death, defeating Kathy Postlewait for the second straight year in extra holes. Sandra Haynie, a veteran on the comeback trail and the 1974 Open victor, won the previous week, and Carner the week before that. Pat Bradley is the defending champion.
