Britain waits on Argentina for a go-ahead on POWs

July 9, 1982

Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher called on Argentina to admit that the Falkland Islands war is over so Britain can repatriate about 600 high-ranking Argentine prisoners.

Argentina earlier in the day released the only British prisoner it was known to have captured during the conflict. But Britain, which has sent home more than 10,000 Argentine prisoners, says it intends to keep about 600 until Argentina declares that hostilities are over. The prisoners held by Britain include Gen. Menendez, commander of the Argentine garrison that surrendered June 15.
