Vietnam says it will cut Kampuchean troop level

July 8, 1982

Vietnam announced Wednesday it will withdraw a significant number of its troops from Kampuchea (Cambodia) this month.

Foreign Minister Nguyen Co Thach said further withdrawals would follow if Thailand agreed to Vietnam's demands that it stop support for opposition groups in Kampuchea from going through Thai territory.

The announcement coincided with Prince Norodom Sihanouk's arrival in Kampuchea Wednesday to carry out plans for establishing a coalition government of anti-Vietnamese resistance forces.
