July 2, 1982

In exchange for $300,000 and a flight home, a Sri Lankan hijacker has freed the last of 259 hostages who had been held aboard an Italian jumbo jet for 33 hours.

In accordance with a promise by his nation's ambassador, the hijacker, who claimed to be a Libyan terrorist, will not be arrested, government officials said. But on his return today (July 2) he will be questioned by narcotics detectives about alleged drug offenses.
