A senior US official said the Soviet Union recently deployed 50 new SS-20 missiles west of the Ural Mountains. He also accused Moscow of having made misleading statements when it announced a freeze earlier this year.

Richard Burt, assistant secretary of state-designate for European affairs, told NATO the Soviets completed additional bases in the European part of their territory. He said the increase brings the number of operational SS-20 warheads to 945.
