Railwaymen halt strike that stymied Britain

The National Union of Railwaymen decided Monday night to suspend a nationwide strike that plunged Britain's public transport into chaos.

The union's annual conference voted 47 to 30 to halt the walkout and refer the dispute to a tribunal. London was the worst hit, because the shutdown of the state-owned British Rail commuter trains coincided with a separate dispute which halted the capital's subway system and some of its bus services.
