Kennedy speech hits hard on Reagan, Republicans

June 28, 1982

The Democrats wound up their mid-term convention Sunday with Sen. Edward M. Kennedy delivering a blistering attack on the Reagan administration.

The delegates made it clear who they came to hear - and were rewarded with a vintage Kennedy barn-burner. He opened with an impassioned denunciation of Republicans for killing the ERA, brought out specific Reagan administration ''failures,'' and closed saying those failures spell a bright future for the Democratic Party.

Convention proposals included an immediate freeze on nuclear weapons, support for Israel in the invasion of Lebanon, and tax reform that would provide a personal tax ceiling of 28 percent of income and a limit on tax credits to the rich.
