''Dense pack'' basing for the MX missile isn't playing well down on the farm.

In Wyoming, which has been proposed as a possible site for dense-pack basing, residents worry that this could be the tip of an iceberg that would swallow much of their state. The dense-pack plan would cluster MX missiles within a 10-to-12 square mile area, on the theory that the first Soviet warhead to detonate over the area would destroy all the others coming in, thus protecting the majority of the MX silos.

''What would Wyoming be without ranches and farms? If the MX system comes to Wyoming, we will begin to find out,'' warns an anti-MX resident of Cheyenne.
