Jordan's King in Moscow again

June 24, 1982

King Hussein of Jordan, traditionally pro-Western but increasingly unhappy with US policy in the Mideast, has arrived for his second visit to the Soviet Union in barely a year, Monitor correspondent Ned Temko reports.

The Soviet news agency Tass called the King's visit ''unofficial.'' But Arab diplomats said plans are for him to meet various senior Soviet officials, including President Leonid Brezhnev, and that the current Mideast fighting is sure to figure in these discussions.

Western analysts are interpreting King Hussein's decision to go ahead with the trip to Moscow despite the Israeli invasion of Lebanon as a sign of sharpened Jordanian displeasure with US policy.

Soviet officials, meanwhile, have made it clear they hope the move into Lebanon by the US-allied Israelis will seriously complicate US relations with key Arab regimes - of which Jordan is one.
