House panel, bucking Reagan, backs A-freeze

June 24, 1982

The House Foreign Affairs Committee became the first congressional body to approve a nuclear freeze resolution over the opposition of President Reagan.

Mr. Reagan opposed the measure on grounds it would lock the Soviets into a superior military position.

Seven Republicans voted for the freeze resolution. The committee voted 26 to 9 for the resolution, calling on the United States and the Soviets to seek a freeze on further development of nuclear weapons.
