World labor body adopts rule against sudden firing

June 23, 1982

The International Labor Organization (ILO) overwhelmingly adopted a new convention that would give workers added protection against sudden or arbitrary dismissal.

US government and employers' delegates opposed the convention action on dismissals, saying that the best protection against loss of jobs was a healthy economy, not government intervention. Member states must now decide whether to ratify the code. If they do, it becomes binding in that country under international law.
