Guatemalan guerrillas hit peasant collaboration

June 17, 1982

Leftist guerrillas seeking revenge against peasant Army collaborators attacked a village and killed 100 people, the Guatemalan Army said.

The insurgents were retaliating against the local civil defense patrol, which had killed 20 guerrillas in operations since February. The Army has organized 25 ,000 peasants in such patrols.

President Efrain Rios Montt said he began negotiations with guerrillas and hopes to reach an agreement with the rebels in Washington to end Guatemala's civil war.
