Vietnam urged to seek Kampuchean settlement

June 17, 1982

Wrapping up its three-day conference here, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) called on Vietnam to join the international community in seeking a political settlement in Kampuchea (Cambodia). They said Hanoi's refusal to withdraw its 200,000 troops in Kampuchea endangered peace and security in the region.

US Deputy Secretary of State Walter Stoessel, arriving for annual talks with ASEAN foreign ministers, said the United States is deeply committed to working closely with ASEAN.
