T-shirt training fleeced taxpayers, senator says

June 16, 1982

Sen. William Proxmire (D) of Wisconsin gave his Golden Fleece award for June to the Commerce and Labor Departments for spending more than $700,000 on a nonprofit corporation that was supposed to teach minority youths how to make T-shirts.

He said no T-shirts were produced for sale, nor did any minority youths find jobs, but the taxpayer lost his shirt.
