Guatemalan general turns trio into solo operation

Gen. Efrain Rios Montt became sole ruler of Guatemala after an apparent Army coup that ousted two fellow members of the military junta thattook power March 23.

General Montt said Wednesday he assumed the presidency, which was previously vacant, at the Army's urging. The ousted junta members, Gen. Horacio Maldonado Schaad and Col. Luis Gordillo Martinez, flanked General Rios Montt as he announced the move to the Cabinet.
