Antiguerrilla sweep pays off for Salvadoran military

June 7, 1982

Twenty-four leftist guerrillas surrendered in northern Chalatenango Province on the sixth day of a major Army sweep led by US-trained battalions there, Salvadoran authorities said.

Army investigators were questioning the guerrillas to see if they would be eligible for freedom under the terms of a 1981 amnesty decree, the spokesman said.
