Israel pushes Europe to back Camp David process

June 4, 1982

Israeli leaders stepped up their diplomatic campaign for a new European approach to the Middle East problem during talks with West German Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher Thursday.

Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir told Mr. Genscher the European Community should provide stronger support for the Camp David process under which Israel and Egypt made peace.

Mr. Genscher arrived here Wednesday night to hold a series of intensive meetings aimed at achieving greater West German-Israeli understanding, particularly on the Middle East peace process. He is the first senior West German minister to visit Israel since Prime Minister Menachem Begin last year accused Chancellor Helmut Schmidt of callous disregard for Jewish victims of Nazi Germany.
