Israel and US agree to act on suspended agreement

May 27, 1982

Israel and the United States have agreed to carry out parts of their suspended strategic cooperation agreement without formally reviving the accord, senior Defense Department officials said.

The agreement is the result of wide-ranging talks between Israeli Defense Minister Ariel Sharon and Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger.

The US willingness to act on military economic elements of the accord seemed to indicate movement toward reviving the entire agreement, which diplomatic sources said might occur when Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin meets with President Reagan in Washington next month.
