US-owned paper in Rome bombed by communists

May 27, 1982

Communist extremists bombed the offices of an American-owned English-language newspaper in what they said was ''a greeting for the hangman Reagan.'' President Reagan is scheduled to visit Rome June 7 in the course of his coming European tour.

After the attack on the International Daily News offices, the Italian news agency ANSA received a phone call from a terrorist organization claiming responsibility for the blast.

In recent months communist terrorists have carried out a series of similar bomb attacks against American-connected institutions in Rome.
