Andropov, promoted, leaves his KGB post

Yuri V. Andropov, head of the KGB state security police, left his post in a move apparently linked with his recent political promotion in the Kremlin power structure.

The move confirmed the impression that Mr. Andropov has moved into the position of likely contender to succeed Leonid Brezhnev as general secretary of the Communist Party.
