May 19, 1982

Floods in south China's Guangdong Province have killed 430 people so far, the semiofficial China News Service said. Dams at 114 reservoirs and 84 dikes have burst, inundating 825,000 acres of farmland, it said. The floods have been called the country's worst in 60 years. The provincial government called for urgent repairs to dikes, since the rainy season has just begun and more flooding could occur.
