Alert in Warsaw continues as farm union celebrates

May 13, 1982

Polish authorities rolled out police trucks and water cannon for the second straight day, as the suspended farmers' union, known as Rural Solidarity, celebrated its first anniversary with a mass at Warsaw Cathedral.

A normally reliable underground bulletin reported that 16 top interned Solidarity leaders said they would go on a hunger strike at the Bialoleka prison near Warsaw on Thursday, the day marking five months of martial law.
