An Iwo Jima landing -- 37 years later

May 6, 1982

US marines staged landing exercises on the island of Iwo Jima, scene of some of the fiercest fighting in the Pacific during World War II. The 800 marines which participated in the practice belong to the same Marine division that took part in the battle there in 1945 in which 21,000 Japanese and 6,000 US soldiers were killed.
