Moderate wins big in St. Lucia election

May 5, 1982

St. Lucia's United Workers Party scored a resounding win in Monday's general elections on the tiny Caribbean island, according to preliminary figures. The count showed that the party, led by former Prime Minister John Compton, had taken 14 of the 17 seats in the House of Assembly.

Mr. Compton, who was prime minister from 1954 to 1979, is a middle-of-the-road politician who supports a government-private sector alliance and a pro-Western stance for St. Lucia.
