Riot police, youth gangs face off in west London

April 22, 1982

Riot police clashed with gangs of up to 200 stone-hurling youths in west London for four hours in the city's worst street violence since uprisings in the Brixton district of south London a year ago. The riots were apparently sparked when police detained a black couple suspected of possessing drugs. An angry crowd gathered and police were attacked. Scotland Yard said five policemen were slightly injured and 24 rioters arrested.
