Gun battle breaks out along Korean border

April 22, 1982

North and South Korean soldiers fought a four-hour gun battle across the border demilitarized zone, touched off after four North Korean soldiers were killed or injured by one of their own mines while trying to defect to the South, according to the South Korean Defense Ministry. No South Koreans were wounded, they said. The North confirmed it had suffered casualties, but said the battle was sparked by South Korean troops firing on a civilian police patrol.
