Fighting among factions grows heavier in Beirut

April 16, 1982

Machine-gun fire and exploding artillery and mortar shells echoed across Beirut as rival factions battled in the city's southern outskirts.

Clashes between the Shiite Muslim militia and an array of Lebanese leftist and Palestinian groups erupted in a dozen south Lebanese villages early in the week and spread to the capital. At least 25 people have been killed.
