US compromise reported for Jordanian arms plan

April 14, 1982

The Reagan administration is drafting a compromise package in which the US would not sell politically sensitive mobile Hawk antiaircraft missiles or advanced F-16 jet fighters, but would allow Jordan to buy newly developed F-5G Tigershark planes instead, the New York Times reported.

The US and Jordan are scheduled to meet in Amman, Jordan, this month to discuss the deal, which has drawn heavy fire in Congress and from Israel, but the Times said the two sides would probably postpone any formal action until after congressional elections in November.
