China, Mongolia complete talks about their border

April 7, 1982

China and Soviet-aligned Mongolia ended six weeks of talks on common border problems, the first meeting since the two countries agreed to such discussions in 1964, the New China News Agency reported. The countries metin Ulan Bator, the Mongolian capital, between Feb. 18 and April 3, the agency said.

The two countries reached an agreement on their 3,000-mile border in 1962, but their relations have been icy. Mongolia accuses China of expansionist aims, and Peking claims its northern neighbor is a Soviet puppet state with several Red Army divisions on its soil.

The meetings are significant in view of recent Soviet peace overtures toward the Peking government.
