Nicaragua asks UN action after US resolution veto

April 5, 1982

Nicaragua, in hopes of gaining greater exposure for its claim that the United States could sponsor an ''imminent invasion'' of the country, will call for a special United Nations General Assembly meeting this month, junta member Sergio Ramirez Mercado said.

He said the US, by vetoing a Security Council resolution calling on all UN members to denounce the use of force in Central America, showed that it is not interested in peace in the region.
