Military gives Poles freer travel, telephone service

More martial law restrictions are being lifted this week, including extensions of Poland's domestic air traffic and telephone systems.

Monitor correspondent Eric Bournes reports Poles will be able to use internal automatic telephone dialing for the first time since Dec. 13, and there will be more daily flights between the capital and all major regional cities.

International telephone is still closed to Poles. Western journalists here may now telephone their home offices, or elsewhere, but the calls may only be made from the press center, under military supervision.

Regular flights will be resumed between here and Brussels, Athens, Beirut and Frankfurt.

There is as yet no sign of the change many Poles are most eager for -- a removal of the ban on travel to non-communist bloc countries.
