Indonesian election rally turns into riot

March 19, 1982

Police and troops battled thousands of rock-throwing youths in Jakarta after an election rally organized by Indonesia's ruling party turned into rioting and arson. More than 60 people were injured in the fighting and 89 were arrested.

It was not immediately clear what sparked the rioting, but people shouting slogans of the opposition Moslem United Development Party (PPP)were among those who attacked security forces at the rally.
