US reports fatal accidents on Soviet nuclear subs

March 17, 1982

Navy Secretary John Lehman disclosed the Pentagon has information of Soviet deaths in incidents aboard nuclear submarines. In several cases Soviet submarines have had to be evacuated because of radiation leaks, he said at a breakfast meeting with reporters.

He said the Soviet Union had not given priority to safety in its submarine program, while the United States had always stressed safety. Navy officials say there has never been a nuclear accident aboard a US ship.
