Census director sees era of more stable marriages

Morality and the economy are likely to combine this decade to produce more stable marriages, fewer divorces, and less mobility, predicts the director of the Census Bureau.

''I would predict that we're going to see family life stabilize,'' said Bruce Chapman. ''I think marriage is coming back.'' In an interview with U.S. News & World Report, Mr. Bruce added, ''An awful lot of that can be explained by the fact that the baby-boom generation - people born between 1946 and 1964 - are coming into a more subtle phase of their lives.''
